I think Reefton , a real surprise, nice little place
At the port entrance Greymouth
A deep gorge on Westland trail
Meet at photo point greymouth
Stripping down winter woolies at Reefton
Pike river memorial
Yesterday had to make a decision as needed to get to reliable wifi for a meeting today. Reluctantly cut out the big river section, not that I was looking forward to it as is difficult but didn’t want to miss the adventure nor leave my mates Steve and kristy. Once made had to get on and just do it.
Started at about 7.30, dressed for really cod like yesterday and although cool wasn’t so bad and as got immediately into an uphill soon warmed up. The road from springs Junction to reefton is really good and we made good pace and it took next to no time and we in reefton , a neat main street at about 10?ish. about 44 kms and a lot of rolling hills and mainly downhill from springs junction. Jack lovelocks memorial is just outside town and I paid my respects as he was an idol of mine. Won 1500m at berlin Olympics, I think in front of hitler. Nothings changed has it !.
Had another large 2nd breakie and Lee -Anne joined us as did another tour rider Owen from up north way. Some great cafes in this part of the world and obviously setup for tourist trade. Lovely FOOD ! and finding it hard not to eat and eat and eat. Oh I love my food!
Left my mates and started to Ikamatua then to Greymouth and then to here. 154 km for day an wasn’t hard . Had some headwinds for a while but generally the great weather continues. Had my tires replaced and new brakes fitted in Greymouth but really obliging cycle shop, so another cafe and more food but mainly three bottles of drink including one can of coke(I know I mustn’t but its so nice-actually paid the price as felt it for first 8 km comping out of Greymouth. the trial leaving greymouth is cool, going around the port and water so Lyall’s in his element. . I drink heaps these days and on days I don’t drink s much I suffer so something to pass on t others.
The westcoast wilderness trail is a real lovely track as it changes from open coastal to bush and surface is good. Kumera is 30 km south of Greymouth and is really benefiting from this trail. Really old hotel we we ate last night was fab and caught up with tour riders whilst gulping down a pasta and an apple pie. Sprocket, Also know as sam caught up with. e meet on the first day as he and his wife past me and I caught them again on that headwind finish in Ahipara. His wife has had to pull out and he is a machine road cyclist. he can really go. But due to iss has ended up behind me a few times and had had a rest in wellington. He did some huge days . Like Mangakino to Tamananuri which is massive is length and include very tough section up to timber trails and then thru timber trail. I remember him and his wife in Mt Eden cycles when she was having her bike fixed as didn’t help her leg issue, that was probably my lowest point I think. i was dehydrated, very sore and thank god I took time to just sit in shade on roundabout before final climb into summit of Mt eden, gather myself and then get back on bike and slowly ride thru south Auckland via airport to Flat bush. It was where my tour started again and I had hope. Seems like a long time ago.
best get up and get to my meeting. today is largely a rest day as meeting is 9 till 3then will try and cycle to Hokitika and meet up wth steve and Kristy-71 km in two legs according to guide book. Now a well thumbed book with lots of maths and nate’s that I make along the way. sits in a see thru plastic bag on my handlebars.
Best get dressed, food in me, and get bike to hotel .
Hope all well at home, I seem so out of touch with the rest of the world .
